Maine Sport Outfitters recently teamed up with the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership for a Patagonia film night fundraiser. On Saturday, January 25th, sixty-five guests of all ages enjoyed wine donated by Cellardoor Winery, beer, popcorn, environmental films and giveaways in Maine Sport’s newly established Patagonia Shop. At the end of the night, $360 was raised for Hurricane Island’s aquaculture program. This is the second Patagonia film night Maine Sport Outfitters has hosted.
The research team on Hurricane Island works with local fishermen and scientists to tackle some of the most pressing issues in the marine environment facing Penobscot Bay. On the 3.2 acre aquaculture site off Hurricane Island, their team is growing upwards of 8,000 scallops, although the exact number has yet to be determined. In youth summer programs, students have the opportunity to work with the researchers directly and learn all about aquaculture and just how important it can be to our local economy. The money raised during the Patagonia film night will go directly to equip their aquaculture program - specifically a new lobster trap hauler. About Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership:
The mission of the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is to integrate science education, applied research, and leadership development through year-round educational programs and a seasonal, environmentally-sustainable island community. Engaging with Hurricane Island's off-grid systems, unplugging from the distractions of an online world, and conducting field work in a natural setting inspires youth to tackle the most pressing issues of our day, because they gain the leadership skills to turn their knowledge into action. Both on and off Hurricane Island, they are educating tomorrow’s leaders in the STEM fields, and building a cohesive scientific community based on experiential education and environmental awareness. Hurricane Island is located about 12 miles off the coast of Rockland, Maine.
